Rotary Club Celebrates 50 Years of Service by Ray King

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains recently celebrated a remarkable milestone, recognising Ray King for 50 years of dedicated membership and service to Rotary and the wider community.

As part of the celebration, Rotarian Carolyn Cameron hosted a special “This Is Your Life” presentation. Fellow Rotarians and community members shared memories and stories highlighting Ray’s outstanding contribution to Rotary and the Ashburton community over the past five decades.

To mark this significant achievement, Ray was then presented with a beautifully crafted commemorative clock in recognition of his half-century of commitment to the ideals of Rotary and his outstanding contribution to both the club and the community.

Ray joined the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains on 23 June 1976 and quickly became involved in club leadership and service activities. Within two years he was serving as Director of the Youth Committee, followed by a year in Club Administration before becoming Club President in 1982-83.

Over the ensuing decades, Ray has held numerous leadership and service roles within the club, including Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Sergeant, Vocational Committee Chairperson, District Governor’s Representative, and organiser of youth programmes and speech contests. His commitment to developing young people has been a consistent theme throughout his Rotary journey.

In recognition of his service, Ray was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship in 1994. He later received additional recognition through Sapphire Pins, culminating in a Double Sapphire Pin in 2020, acknowledging his continued dedication to Rotary and community service over many years.

One of Ray’s most significant Rotary achievements was serving as District Governor for Rotary District 9970 during the 2002-03 Rotary year. In this role he provided leadership to Rotary clubs from the Rangitata River to the top of the South Island, including the West Coast. During this period he was heavily involved in Rotary International’s PolioPlus campaign, helping support Rotary’s global mission to eradicate polio.

Beyond Rotary, Ray has made substantial contributions to a number of community organisations. He has been involved with the Ashburton District Youth Institute since its inception, supporting fundraising initiatives and leading the annual Kick Start Leadership Course for Year 8 students. He also served for 16 years as a trustee of the Mid and South Canterbury Life Education Trust, including nine years as Chairperson, and served on the National Board of Life Education from 2009 to 2012. In recognition of his service, he was awarded Life Membership of Life Education.

Ray has also contributed his time and expertise through service on the Ashburton Restorative Justice Panel and through hosting international exchange students, helping foster understanding and goodwill between cultures.

Throughout his 50 years of Rotary membership, Ray has exemplified Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” His dedication, leadership, and willingness to contribute wherever needed have left a lasting impact on the Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains, Rotary across New Zealand, and the wider Ashburton community.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton Plains congratulates Ray on this extraordinary milestone and thanks him for five decades of outstanding service.
